Technology Operations Engineer - Shanghai
Who we are
Optiver is a global market maker founded in Amsterdam, with offices in London, Chicago, Austin, New York, Sydney, Shanghai, Hong Kong, Singapore, Taipei and Mumbai. Established in 1986, today we are a leading liquidity provider, with close to 2,000 employees in offices around the world, united in our commitment to improve the market through competitive pricing, execution and risk management. By providing liquidity on multiple exchanges across the world in various financial instruments we participate in the safeguarding of healthy and efficient markets. We provide liquidity to financial markets using our own capital, at our own risk, trading a wide range of products: listed derivatives, cash equities, ETFs, bonds and foreign currencies.
Since its establishment in 2012, our Shanghai office is a rapidly growing participant in the Chinese markets, trading exchange-listed futures, options and equities in China mainland. Our vision is to become the trusted partner in the development of Chinese financial markets. With the culture of a start-up but the backing of a 35+ year-old trading firm, the Optiver Shanghai office is truly unique. Everyone who joins us will help shape the future of our company and its global impact. Get ready: we are only just beginning.
What you'll do
The China Technology Operations Engineer is responsible for the operational readiness, regulatory compliance and market infrastructure that underpin Optiver's trading business in China. The role owns exchange-facing technical operations, regulatory reporting and audits, and cross-functional initiatives that are critical to running a high-frequency trading business in a highly regulated market.
You will be primarily responsible for China's operational and technical obligations, working with traders, engineers and compliance internally, and with exchanges, brokers, regulators, auditors and vendors externally. This is a hands-on, high-impact role with real accountability for outcomes rather than coordination alone.
You will be part of Optiver's CTO Office, the global function accountable for how technology is run and governed across our offices, with colleagues holding the equivalent brief in our other APAC markets. The work you do in China will shape how we meet these obligations elsewhere.
You will:
-
Own and manage Optiver's exchange-facing technical operations in China, and the relationships with external parties, including exchanges, brokers, regulators and vendors.
-
Manage the ongoing regulatory and technical reporting obligations required to operate in the China market, to their external deadlines.
-
Act as the operational point of contact between internal technology teams and external parties, carrying internal requirements outward and external changes inward.
-
Identify operational risks, bottlenecks and opportunities to apply AI and automation, and drive improvements to the processes and controls behind them.
-
Translate technical and regulatory material between Chinese and English, and act as the language bridge in conversations with external parties.
-
Communicate status, risks and decisions to senior stakeholders clearly and early.
-
Build strong working relationships across trading, technology, compliance, legal and external partners.
Who you are
We're looking for candidates:
-
With a strong understanding of how technology, operations and regulation intersect in a trading environment.
-
With a solid foundational understanding of IT infrastructure, systems engineering, networking or software development, to engage credibly with engineers and work hands-on where the role requires it.
-
Who have directly owned regulatory and technical reporting and audits, including coordinating evidence with external auditors and internal stakeholders.
-
Fluent in Chinese and English, culturally attuned to China's ways of working, to effectively bridge communication between Optiver and external parties.
-
Who operate effectively across multiple teams and functions, often without direct authority, and communicate clearly with senior stakeholders.
-
With experience operating in environments with high accountability, ambiguity and time-sensitive outcomes, adapting to shifting priorities across a broad remit.
What you'll get
You'll join a culture of collaboration and excellence, where you'll be surrounded by curious thinkers and creative problem solvers. Driven by a passion for continuous improvement, you'll thrive in a supportive, high-performing environment alongside talented colleagues, working collectively to tackle some of the most complex problems in the financial markets.
In return for your expertise, you will have access to a range of Optiver perks, including:
-
A performance-based bonus structure unmatched anywhere in the industry. We combine our profits across desks, teams and offices into a global profit pool, fostering a truly collaborative environment.
-
The chance to work alongside diverse and intelligent peers in a rewarding environment.
-
Training, mentorship and personal development opportunities.
-
Daily breakfast, lunch and snacks.
-
Gym membership, sports and leisure activities, plus weekly in-house chair massages.
-
Regular social events, clubs and Friday afternoon drinks.
