Senior Software Engineer, Backend (Java) - All Genders

Own the Backend.

Doodle is a B2B SaaS platform used by millions of professionals to coordinate meetings and collaboration across teams and companies. We are building the future of scheduling and productivity. We work on hard problems at the meeting point of human collaboration and digital efficiency. We craft elegant solutions to complex problems, and we are looking for passionate problem solvers who share this drive.

We aren't just looking for someone to "write code." You are more than a coder. You are a proactive builder and a continuous learner. You thrive on shipping products that matter. You always find a way to reach the goal.

Our core backend runs on a high performance, polyglot ecosystem of Go and Java services built on Kafka, aiming for high throughput. We value engineers who are naturally curious and proactive. You will read, trace, and understand workflows across the entire codebase, looking beyond your primary language to solve complex problems.

We love high velocity. We actively encourage our engineers to use LLM and agentic tools (Specs, Loops, and agentic workflows) to iterate fast and build systems. We stay provider agnostic (Anthropic, OpenAI, Cursor, local models, or self hosted models in the cloud). Use these tools to supercharge your iterations. We pair that speed with deep pride in ownership. A natural "READ THE CODE" mindset, where you keep a full understanding of, and full accountability for, every line you bring across the finish line.

What You'll Actually Do

• Own the Backend: Design, build, and deploy robust, scalable, high performance backend services in Java that power our core platforms.

• Serve the Data: Expose backend endpoints through GraphQL, with efficient data fetching, query optimization, and clean integration with frontend systems.

• Architect for Scale: Build event driven solutions on Kafka for seamless data flow, system reactivity, and extreme reliability.

• See the Whole System: Keep full visibility across the backend ecosystem, and understand how services integrate across our distributed infrastructure.

• Ship with AI: Use LLM and agentic tools to move fast, while keeping total ownership and full understanding of the generated code.

• Solve Time: Tackle the hard challenges around how Time is managed, processed, and presented across the globe.

• Translate the Hard Stuff: Work closely with cross functional teams to turn complex scheduling requirements into clean, elegant technical solutions.

What do you bring?

• You'll thrive here if you are a builder who values customer impact as much as clean systems.

• The Foundation: A Bachelor's in Computer Science, a related technical field, or equal practical experience.

• The Toolkit: Professional experience designing, developing, and shipping production ready, highly concurrent backend services in Java.

• The Systems Mind: Strong systems level thinking, with the ability to read, debug, and understand multi language codebases.

• The Distributed Layer: Practical experience with distributed systems, microservices, and event driven architectures built on Kafka.

  Nice to have:

• The AI Edge: Advanced experience using modern AI assisted engineering workflows (Specs, Loops, agentic tools) to safely speed up backend testing, generation, and architecture validation.

• The Infra: Deep knowledge of reactive programming models, cloud infrastructure (AWS or GCP), and containerization (Docker, Kubernetes).

• The Fundamentals: A strong foundation in computer science fundamentals: data structures, algorithms, and distributed system design.

• The API Layer: Experience designing and serving APIs, ideally GraphQL.

• The Location: You are based in Germany with full right to work. We cannot sponsor visas or support relocation at this time.

Why Doodle?

Real Impact: Your commits change how the world meets.

Technical Stretch: We deal with "Time" problems most companies never meet. High throughput, distributed, and reactive by design. It is a masterclass in building systems around a moving target.

Modern Tooling: We give you the best AI and agentic tools, and we expect you to use them.

Culture of Trust: We value curiosity, autonomy, and a balance that respects your time as much as our users'.

At Doodle, we're committed to providing an environment of mutual trust and respect, where equal employment opportunities (EEO) are available to all applicants and teammates without regard to age, race, color, disability, religion, gender, and sexual orientation. Diversity and inclusion are of utmost importance to us. We're committed to building a team that represents a variety of backgrounds, perspectives, and skills. The more inclusive we are, the better our work and our products will be. We want to hear from you, so please don't hesitate to apply! We look forward to receiving your full application.

IMPORTANT NOTICE: Please note that we can only consider your application if you are based and have the right to work in Germany. At this time, we are unable to sponsor a visa for this position or support with relocation.
