Job Description:

Who We Are:

HPE Networking, including Juniper Networks, is building the next generation of routing and switching platforms for cloud, AI, enterprise, and service provider networks.

Our Fabric Platforms team develops the foundational software that enables networking hardware platforms to operate reliably at scale. We work at the intersection of hardware and software, building platform infrastructure for high-performance routing and switching systems based on custom networking ASICs/NPUs, PHYs, and chassis architectures.

Career Level:

This position may be filled at multiple career levels depending on the candidate’s experience, technical depth, demonstrated capabilities, and interview results. We welcome candidates who may not yet meet every expectation but demonstrate strong software fundamentals, creativity, coachability, ownership, and a willingness to learn. Scope, title, and leadership expectations will be calibrated to the level at which the candidate is hired.

Description:

You'll help develop the software foundation for future Juniper networking platforms, working directly with hardware architects, ASIC designers, and software engineers to deliver high-performance routing and switching products used by cloud providers, enterprises, and service providers. We are looking for a hands-on Software Engineer with experience and proficiency in C/C++, as well as the ability to work close to the hardware layer. This role combines systems software development, hardware enablement, platform bring-up, and cross-functional problem solving.

Responsibilities:

• Design, develop, test, and maintain Linux-based platform software for high-performance routing and switching platforms.

• Develop platform infrastructure for hardware discovery, initialization, inventory management, environmental monitoring, interface management, telemetry, and chassis services.

• Contribute to software bring-up of next-generation networking platforms based on custom ASICs/NPUs and merchant silicon.

• Develop hardware abstraction layers and software interfaces that support multiple hardware generations and platform variants.

• Develop and maintain low-level platform software, device drivers, and hardware-management services.

• Work closely with ASIC, hardware, systems, manufacturing, and software teams throughout the product lifecycle.

• Debug and resolve complex platform and hardware/software integration issues using systematic root-cause analysis.

• Contribute to platform resiliency, reliability, serviceability, and observability initiatives.

• Participate in all phases of development, from requirements and design through implementation, validation, deployment, and sustaining engineering.

• For more senior candidates, influence architecture, lead complex cross-functional initiatives, mentor engineers, and provide technical leadership across projects and teams.

Minimum Qualifications:

• BS or MS in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or equivalent practical experience.

• Hands-on experience developing systems software for networking, embedded, or infrastructure platforms. The expected depth and breadth of experience will vary by hiring level.

• Strong software development skills in C and/or modern C++ (C++11 or newer), including the ability to work effectively in a large existing codebase.

• Linux systems programming experience.

• Understanding of core systems concepts such as memory management, concurrency, processes and threads, interrupts, device interaction, and debugging.

• Experience debugging complex problems across software layers or at the hardware/software boundary.

• Ability to learn unfamiliar technologies, take ownership of technical problems, and incorporate feedback effectively.

• Clear written and verbal communication skills and the ability to collaborate across disciplines.

Preferred Qualifications:

We do not expect candidates to have experience in every area below. Relevant depth in one or more areas, combined with strong engineering fundamentals and learning ability, is valuable.

Networking Platform Experience

• Experience with routers, switches, firewalls, networking appliances, network operating systems, chassis systems, or distributed networking platforms.

• Experience with platform infrastructure such as platform or chassis management, hardware discovery and inventory, environmental monitoring, telemetry, or interface management.

• Experience bringing up a new hardware platform from early development through validation or production deployment.

Silicon and Hardware Experience

• Experience with networking ASICs, network processors, switch silicon, SmartNICs, or other hardware accelerators.

• Experience with Ethernet MAC/PHY, optics, high-speed SerDes, gearbox devices, or FEC technologies.

• Familiarity with Broadcom, Marvell, Cisco Silicon One, Intel/Barefoot, or similar networking silicon.

• Working knowledge of PCIe, I2C, SPI, MDIO, FPGA, CPLD, or other board-level hardware interfaces.

Software Architecture, Reliability, and Scale

• Experience designing reusable platform abstractions or hardware-independent software layers.

• Experience developing software that supports multiple hardware platforms or product generations.

• Experience with high availability (HA), ISSU, redundancy, resiliency, monitoring, serviceability, or observability.

• Experience developing software for large-scale networking systems or chassis-based platforms.

• For consideration at more senior levels, demonstrated architectural judgment, technical leadership, mentorship, and the ability to drive complex decisions across teams.

What Will Help You Succeed:

• A hands-on approach and willingness to investigate unfamiliar code, hardware, and system behavior.

• Methodical problem solving and persistence when debugging difficult cross-layer issues.

• Technical curiosity, creativity, and the ability to learn new hardware and software technologies.

• Coachability and openness to technical feedback, paired with growing independence and ownership.

• The ability to explain technical reasoning clearly and collaborate constructively with domain experts.
